Sammy & Dave’s “Excellent 2020 Vanderbilt Day”: Scouting the South Side of Westbury Avenue in Mineola/Carle Place

Not surprisingly, the planned  2020 adventures of Sammy and Dave Russo, our favorite Motor Parkway son and father exploring team, have been suspended.  However, Dave Russo was able to scout out  this Motor Parkway location for future exploration...hopefully this year.

Dave Russo: "So obviously certain things have happened on earth that have prevented Vanderbilt Day V (2020) from happening. One of the locations I had in mind to further explore was the LIMP just SOUTH of Westbury Avenue on the borderline of  Carle Place/Mineola. We have documented the NORTH side quite well  and that is a great accessible location for anyone to go and see - harder in the warmer months of course due to vegetation, but I had a few minutes of free time this week, and swung by the location and wanted to investigate the south side."

The scouting area is south of Westbury Avenue. Further south is the railroad tracks. But, this area north of the soccer fields has never been documented.

The view North of Westbury Road looking toward the target area.

I'm on the south side of the road, looking back at the north side. You can see the fence on the other side, and everyone understands the LIMP location north of the fence. Note the fragment of pavement on the bottom left.

In the exact same spot, just turned around 180 degrees. Ironically roads/paths were built on both sides - but the LIMP ran right in the middle!

On the LIMP, facing north looking back at the bushes from previous photo. Note large pavement pieces on the right side.

Can't argue with this!

LIMP

The southern portion of this location - you can see large dirt mounds beyond this, and after that there is a large soccer field so this is the only LIMP remnant location south of Westbury Avenue until we reach Garden City.

Lots of fragments.

You can see the two layers of LIMP.

So----not the greatest location but LIMP history survives south of Westbury Avenue!

From Art Kleiner:
Nice job, Dave - I haven’t been there in probably 7 years - one time I went there and a few homeless folks were there so I didn’t stay too long (e.g. didn’t look like Motor Parkway enthusiasts).  But here’s some pics from my website page.  Not sure if these relics remain.

Nice exploration guys! I’ve yet to visit this area. Amazing the parkway here remains preserved after 110+ years, sleeping quietly and left undisturbed. The pic with the two-three foot extensions is very cool. Thanks for the update and for sharing. Stay healthy and safe!

Spent quite a bit of time exploring that area with my son Gram about 7 years ago. The homeless situation was a factor but that even reminded me of my own explorations of the parkway in the Alley Pond area back when I was a young boy in the 50s. In those days we would come upon a few hobo camps thriving in the relative secrecy of the Queens park system. Those camps disappeared as work started on the Clearview Expressway.

Art’s picture almost looks like a tombstone!
