Greg O’s Garage: Chrysler’s Chrysler Gets New Plates

During a minor mishap during transportation, one of the replica plates on Walter P. Chrysler’s 1937 Custom Imperial LeBaron town car was damaged beyond repair. Historically accurate plates needed to be reproduced for a proper look on the Chrysler.

Greg O.

The original #10 manufacturer plates on Chrysler's Chrysler from 1937.

During the return trip from the Savoy Museum in Georgia, when the Chrysler was off loaded from the trailer, it was discovered that the plates that had been displayed on the vehicle since restoration had snapped off from the additional weight of metal of a frame mounted to the top of the plate. What was never realized was that the reproduction plates from the restoration were made of plastic as they always looked good while standing back and viewing the car. The attempted repair neither looked good, nor was strong enough to support the heavy metal frame of past show plaques.

Licenseplates.tv is a Florida based plate manufacturer making custom and/or reproduction plates from all over the world for auto enthusiasts, motion picture studios, advertising agencies, or just people looking to make custom personalized plate for whatever reason.

Taking a week of research on Michigan plates from the 1930's and close examination of the 1937 photos, licenseplates.tv felt they had a more accurate plate and corrected fonts for the Chrysler. Old plastic plates (top) new stamped metal plates (bottom)

While there was never a previous complaint of the older plates, when seen side-by-side the difference in detail, quality and appearance becomes clear.

The new plates look even better on the car and can now support the additional weight of the car show badges mounted to the top.
