The “Thermos the Bottle” Truck at the 1909 Race & an Off-Topic Wedding Video
The most unusual vehicle at the 1909 Vanderbilt Cup Race was neither a race car or a spectator's automobile, it was the "Thermos The Bottle" Truck. (Photo courtesy of the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums- Cedarmere).
Long before the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile was created in 1936, American Thermos Bottle built this customized chain-drive truck to promote and sell their product "Thermos The Bottle". Insulated thermos bottles were first manufactured in the the United States in Brooklyn in 1907.
This is another view of the "Thermos The Bottle" truck as seen in 1910. As reported in a recent Hemmings article, the truck's "bodywork seems to be steel over a wood frame, carefully reproducing even the threads on the spin-off hood". The wheelcovers read "Keeps Hot".
Although the fate of the 1909 Thermos truck is unknown, the American Thermos Company continued to build these customized trucks for years and at least one has survived. This restored 1925 Ford Model T Thermos truck is owned by Larry Canova of Norwich, Connecticut.
